Communes · Luxembourg

Where you are
legally married.

In Luxembourg the wedding venue and the place of the legal ceremony are two different decisions. The venue you choose. The commune is chosen for you — by where you live. This page is what we have verified about the communes our couples marry in, and what it means for the day.

Can you marry there on your date?

Choose the commune where one of you lives, then your date.

The four rules that apply everywhere

  1. Your marriage can only be celebrated in the commune where one of you legally resides. There is no “choose a prettier town hall”.
  2. Both of you must be at least 18.
  3. The file goes to the civil registry at the latest one month before the date; the banns are then published for 10 days.
  4. Once published, the marriage must take place within 12 months, otherwise the publication is repeated.

Not every ceremony happens in a town hall

A commune may designate other places for ceremonies, and some have. Dudelange lists six official locations — including two outdoor pavilions and a room for a maximum of eight people. Sanem marries on Fridays in the town hall and on Saturdays in A Gadder. That decision changes the photographs more than any other choice of the day, and it is made at the registry, months before the venue.

Across the border

Couples who live on the other side of the border marry there — and some registries there do what Luxembourg City will not: Saturdays, or no residence requirement at all. These three are where our cross-border couples actually go.

The 22 communes we cover

Population from STATEC (1 January 2025) — it is why these 22 are on the list, not a claim about weddings. Everything else was read on the commune’s own site on 2026-09-09.
