Most Luxembourg couples we work with assume their wedding has to happen May through September. That assumption costs them money — winter venues are sometimes half-price — and it costs them, in our biased opinion, the most photographically interesting light of the year. Twenty-two percent of the weddings we shot in 2025 took place November through February. Here is what to actually expect.
The light
A Luxembourg December afternoon at 15:00 is approximately the equivalent of a June evening at 19:00 — golden, low-angled, dramatic. The window of usable natural light is shorter (typically 09:30 to 16:30 in mid-December) but the quality across that window is more cinematic than any summer day.
For photographers, this is a feature. For couples building a timeline, it requires accepting that the ceremony has to start before 15:00 if you want any natural-light couple portraits afterwards.
The venues
Most Luxembourg wedding venues drop their hire rates 30-50% between November and March. Some venues that are otherwise fully booked 12 months ahead — Bourglinster, Vianden, Urspelt — have weekday and Sunday slots in winter that you can book at 6-8 weeks notice.
The Orangerie de Mondorf, an indoor glasshouse with reliable warm light, is built for exactly this season. So is Cercle Cité in the city — the chandeliered Belle Epoque interior reads cinematic when the December afternoon outside is grey.
The weather
Luxembourg winters: 4-9°C average daytime in January, 5-10°C in February. Rain on roughly 40% of days; snow on roughly 6% of days. Almost no fog. The big risk is grey overcast — flat light from 10:00 to 14:00 if the cloud cover is heavy.

The guest experience
Winter weddings tend to skew smaller — 50 to 80 guests is typical, vs 90 to 130 in summer. Travel from abroad is harder, so the guest list self-selects to local family and close friends. Couples often report afterwards that the smaller count produced a more intimate day they preferred to summer alternatives they had imagined.
Catering: heartier menus, mulled-wine reception drinks, wood-fire receptions. Late-evening guests want to stay because the alternative is going back out into the cold — winter receptions often run later than summer ones.
The honest summary
If you have any flexibility on date, do not dismiss November through February. The photography is better. The venue is cheaper. The guest list is your real one. The day is calmer.
